1. What are the 2023 Tax Deadlines for 2022 Tax Year Returns?
Updated 10/4/2023:
The Internal Revenue Service announced tax relief for individuals and businesses affected by Idalia in parts of Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. Taxpayers affected by the storm that began on Aug. 27, 2023, now have until Feb. 15, 2024, to file various individual and business tax returns and make tax payments. This extension only applies to individuals and businesses that filed an extension earlier this year.

  • Federal

    • March 15: S Corp, Partnership, or request extension

    • April 15: FinCen FBAR

    • April 18: Individual, C Corp, Gift, or request for an extension ​​

    • September 15: Extended S Corp and Partnership deadline

    • October 16: Extended C Corp and Individual returns deadline

  • State

    • April 18: most states except:

      • Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming: No state return necessary

      • Delaware, Iowa: May 1

      • Virginia: May 1​​

*** Taxpayers generally will not need to wait for their 2021 return to be fully processed to file their 2022 tax returns and can file when they are ready.

2. When does tax season start?

  • The IRS will begin accepting and processing 2022 tax year returns on January 23

  • The IRS urges taxpayers and tax professionals to file electronically

  • To avoid delays in processing, people should avoid filing paper returns wherever possible

3. How do I notify the IRS my address has changed?

  • Oral notification: in person or by telephone. Please have the following information ready so the IRS can verify your identity:

    • full name​

    • new address

    • old address

    • date of birth

    • social security number, ITIN or EIN

  • IRS form: use Form 8822-Change of Address or Form 8822-B, Change of Address or Responsible Party Business​.

  • Tax return: use your new address when you file.

  • Written statement: send to the IRS address where you filed your last return with a signed written statement with your:

    • full name​

    • old address

    • new address

    • social security number, ITIN or EIN​

  • Give us a call, we are more than happy to assist you.

*​** It may take 4-6 weeks for a change of address request to be fully processed.

4. Where can I check my refund status?

  • On the IRS website: https://www.irs.gov/refunds

  • On a mobile device: download the IRS2Go app to check your refund status.

  1. What you will need:

    • social security number or ITIN

    • your filing status

    • your exact refund amount

  2. When to check status of your refund:​

    • within 24 hours after the IRS have received your e-filed tax return​.

    • 4 weeks after mailing your paper return.

  3. You should only call the IRS if:​

    • It has been 3 weeks or more since you e-filed your tax return (11 weeks if Form 8379 - Injured Spouse was included)​.

    • It has been 6 weeks or more since you mailed your paper return (14 weeks if Form 8379 - Injured Spouse was included).

    • "Where is My Refund" tells you to contact the IRS.

*** Do not file a second tax return​.

5. Where is My Amended Return?
  1.  What you will need:​

    • social security number​

    • date of birth

    • zip code

  2. When to check:​

    • your amended return will take up to 3 weeks after you mailed it to show up on the system​

    • processing it can take up to 16 weeks

6. How quickly will I get my refund?

  • The IRS issues most refunds within 21 days if taxpayers file electronically and choose direct deposit

  • There are some reasons that some returns may take longer to process:

    • include errors​

    • is incomplete

    • is affected by identity theft or fraud

    • includes a claim filed for an Earned Income Tax Credit or an Additional Child Tax Credit

    • includes a Form 8379 - Injured Spouse, which could take up to 14 weeks to process

    • needs further review

*** Remember, the IRS always contact you by mail, not by phone or email, if they need more information to process your return​.

7. I requested a direct deposit refund, why I received a paper check?

There are 3 possible reasons:

  • The bank account that you gave the IRS is not under your name, your spouse's name or in a joint account. 

  • Your financial institution may reject a direct deposit.

  • There are more than 3 electronic refunds that have been deposited into your bank account.

8. Why is my refund different than the amount on the tax return I filed?

  • All or part of your refund may have been used to pay off past-due federal tax, state income tax, state unemployment compensation debts, child support, spousal support, … If you have questions about an offset, contact the agency to which you owe the debt.

  • The IRS may have changed your refund amount because they made changes to your tax return. You will get a notice explaining the changes.

9. What should I do when the refund I received is not from my tax account?

  • Please DON'T cash the refund check or spend the direct deposit refund

  • Send the refund back to the IRS
